Wolf Hood Not Clearing Smoke in Wellesley: Where the Airflow Goes
A hood can only exhaust the air a house lets back in, which is why a sealed winter kitchen loses to a plume the same hood handles in August. Test with the house shut and then open, clear the baffles, and treat make-up air as a code question.
The complaint usually arrives in winter. Something gets seared, the hood goes to full, and the smoke sits under the liner for a moment before rolling out along the ceiling towards the rest of the house. The same dish in August, with the back door propped, behaves perfectly. Nobody connects those two facts, because one of them happened four months earlier.
They are the same fact. A hood is a pump with only one visible end, and the end you cannot see is the building. Whatever gets thrown out has to be let back in, and a house that has been properly sealed will not oblige.
Prove the hood is actually moving air
Take one sheet of tissue paper and hold it flat under the filter opening while the hood runs. Note whether it stays there unaided. Now repeat the entire test with the kitchen door propped and a window cracked at the other end of the house. Two readings, same hood, four minutes.
The comparison is the diagnosis. Paper that fails both ways means the restriction is in the hood or the run, and the filters come out next. Paper that holds both ways while smoke still escapes means the plume is leaving before the hood can reach it, which is a matter of size and position rather than power. Paper that only holds with the house opened up puts you squarely in the third section of this page, and it is the most common result of the three in a modern, well-insulated kitchen.
Do it at every setting rather than just the highest. A hood that pulls acceptably on its lowest step and gains nothing above that is telling you the ceiling is being set by something other than the motor.
Wellesley Hills makes the point neatly. Those houses are a century old, but the kitchens were rebuilt in the last twenty years and the shell was tightened at the same time — new windows, air sealing, insulation — while the range and the blower got substantially larger. Both halves of that change were sensible. Together they created a fan with nothing to breathe.
Baffles and grease: the boring answer, checked first
Eliminate the filters before building any theory about the house, because it takes an evening and it settles the question. Baffle filters throw grease onto steel by forcing air round tight bends, and they are meant to be washed and put straight back. The layer that matters is not the film you can see on the face; it is the build-up deep in the channels where two baffles meet.
Soak them in hot water with a degreasing detergent rather than attacking them with a brush, rinse, and dry them completely before they go back. Check the model’s own guide before running them through a dishwasher — some finishes come out of that looking tired even though they clean adequately.
Frequency has no honest single answer, and anyone who offers one is selling something. A household that sears and fries several nights a week loads its baffles in a fraction of the time a household that mostly bakes and boils does. The filters themselves are the schedule.
Whatever gets past them lands on the impeller behind, coating it unevenly and putting it out of balance. That shows up as sound long before it shows up as extraction, so a hood that grew noisier a year ago and weaker this year has been giving notice for some time. Once the filters are clean and dry, retest with the tissue at the same setting. No change means they were never the restriction.
Air out means air in
This is the section most Wellesley kitchens actually need. A blower can only exhaust what the house is able to replace, and a well-built modern envelope has very few places for replacement air to come from. The motor ends up fighting the building rather than the smoke, and the plume simply walks around the edge of the liner and carries on.
Learn the symptoms and you stop misdiagnosing this. The kitchen door resists as you push it shut. There is a thin note at a window sash that is not there when the hood is off. Exterior doors need a shove. Performance changes with what is open elsewhere in the house, which is the giveaway, because no genuine duct fault cares whether a bedroom window is up.
Take the appliance side seriously. A boiler or a water heater sending its exhaust up a flue depends on the same scarce indoor air, and a hard-running kitchen fan in an airtight house can disturb the way those flues behave. Not a homeowner test, and not a hood repair either. It goes to a licensed heating installer.
The instinctive fix — a stronger blower — makes it worse in a way that is easy to predict once you see the mechanism. The shortfall is on the intake, so adding capacity increases demand against a supply that has not moved. You get more noise, more load on the motor, and roughly the same smoke in the room. Proper make-up air is a dedicated, interlocked supply, sized and fitted to the mechanical code in force, and in this climate usually tempered, because untempered replacement air in February is its own complaint. Sizing and installing that belongs with a qualified installer.
Two local patterns show up repeatedly. In Wellesley Square, where the colonials and capes sit on modest lots and the kitchen is one tight run of cabinets, a decade-old insulation and window upgrade has left a shell with no leaks worth the name, and the hood is now competing with the whole building. Out in Wellesley Farms, the estate-scale houses frequently run a second cooking area in a butler’s pantry with its own extraction, and two hoods on at once in a tight house halve each other without either one being faulty.
Run length, elbows and the reducer someone fitted
If the building is not the constraint, the run generally is. Elbows cost resistance out of all proportion to the space they take up, which is why a duct is judged on equivalent length: every turn converted into the straight footage it behaves like, then added to the genuine straight sections. Two tight turns in a short run can outweigh a long, clean one.
The narrowest section governs everything upstream and downstream of it. A transition pinched to get through a joist bay caps the run at that point no matter how generous the ducting is on either side, and it is usually invisible above a ceiling. Flexible duct fitted where rigid was specified drags along its whole length through the internal ribbing, and any sag between hangers holds what the filters let through.
Then the last inch. The cap outside carries a damper that has to swing free — a flap held down by grease, paint, an added screen or nesting material will strangle a perfect duct at the point of exit. Watch it from the ground while someone starts the blower. A ladder above one storey is not part of this exercise, and neither is a roof.
Wellesley Hills adds elbows for a structural reason. When the kitchen is in a rear addition, the run has to leave that addition and negotiate a roof line before it gets to open air, and every negotiation is a turn.
When to stop testing and pick up the phone
Finish these yourself: wash and dry the baffles, run the tissue comparison sealed and open at each setting, watch the outside cap while the hood starts, and note whether the trouble tracks the seasons.
Hand over anything electrical or structural. A burning smell. A breaker that trips as the blower starts. A motor that hums and will not turn. Any work needing the liner dropped or the cap reached from a roof.
A technician replaces your inferences with readings: static pressure across the system, motor draw against the figure the motor is rated for, and whether the damper opens when the air pushes it rather than when a hand does. Those three settle whether this is a part, a duct rebuild, or a conversation about make-up air with an installer — and the last of those is not something we would sell you a blower to avoid. Is a louder hood always a stronger hood?
No, and frequently the reverse. Noise comes from turbulence and from a motor working hard, and both rise when air is being forced through a restriction. A blinded filter or an undersized run makes a hood louder while it moves less air. Judge extraction by whether a sheet of tissue holds itself against the filters, never by what you can hear from the table.
Does a recirculating hood clear smoke at all?
Only partly. Charcoal filtration removes grease and a proportion of the odour and then puts the same air straight back into the kitchen, so heat, steam and the plume you can see remain exactly where they were. A ducted hood takes them out of the house. Where smoke is the complaint and there is no duct, the answer is an installation change.
Why does the hood work better with a window open?
An open window gives the blower somewhere to draw replacement air from. Sealed up, the fan is pulling against the entire building and losing, which is why one hood copes in summer and fails in January. Treat it as a diagnosis rather than a workaround: the real remedy is a properly sized make-up air supply fitted by a qualified installer.
